The World’s Best Foods: Fish and Eggs

Fish and eggs are generally the healthiest and most environmentally friendly animal protein sources. They can also be very tasty and convenient and should be a regular in any weekly meal plan.

What’s so great about fish and eggs?

Both offer a high quality protein source with plenty of other nutrients. Protein is the most problem-free macro-nutrient. The other two, carbohydrates and fats, often face critique for good reasons: simple sugars and saturated fats can indeed be very bad for you.

The only real issue with protein is that some foods don’t contain all the amino acids required for proper bodily function. This is a challenge for vegan diets, but not for diets that include some animal protein.

So, while it’s certainly possible to get all the protein you need from plant sources, including fish and eggs makes this a whole lot easier (and tastier).

Fish come in many different varieties and, if you include both white and oily fish in your diet, you’ll be maximizing the nutritional benefits. Oily fish in particular is a great source of healthy omega-3 fatty acids and one of the rare high-grade sources of vitamin D. As an added bonus, fish is low in unhealthy saturated fats, unlike most other animal proteins.

Eggs are valued for their practicality, good balance between saturated and unsaturated fat, and their ability to control cravings. You’ll also get some vitamin D from egg yolks.

Tips and tricks

Everyone should know one or two simple and delicious fish recipes, preferably one for oily fish and one for white fish. If you don’t have one of these in your arsenal, climb on the internet and find some highly rated ones to try 🙂

Oily fish like salmon or mackerel become much more practical in smoked or canned form. Smoked fish should be consumed in moderation though (I restrict myself to 100 g per week).

It’s also well worth your while to invest a few minutes on the internet to learn how to make proper omelette and scrambled eggs. If you can do it well, you’ll have the power to create a great culinary experience in five minutes 🙂

Unless you’re a serious vegan, including these prime sources of animal protein in your diet is a great idea. They’re winners regardless of whether you look from a nutritional, taste and practical viewpoint.

Fish and eggs still come with some animal welfare responsibilities though. Always choose free-range eggs and look for sustainably caught or farmed fish.
